SUNRISE HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL CENTER BECOMES THE FIRST CERTIFIED ADVANCED COMPREHENSIVE STROKE CENTER IN NEVADA

Las Vegas, NV, June 14, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center announces today it has been accredited by The Joint Commission as an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center, becoming the first medical center in Nevada to receive the certification. The achievement reflects the highest level of competence for the treatment of acute stroke events and assures the public of 24/7/365 stroke service at the largest hospital in Nevada.

On average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds in the U.S. With over 950 primary stroke patients receiving care at Sunrise Hospital each year, Comprehensive Stroke Center certification demonstrates an “always-on” stroke competency. It means neuro-interventional care is ready at a moment’s notice - as is a team of neurology specialists. Further, in addition to being the most clinically advanced and technology-equipped to treat stroke, all of the treatment options, the needed staffing and access to patient-centered stroke research are standing ready.

During an onsite review earlier this month, Joint Commission experts investigated Sunrise Hospital’s ability to comply with Comprehensive Stroke Center standards. In the region’s most complex clinical environment, Sunrise Hospital demonstrated for surveyors, consistent compliance with the rigorous requirements of the certification process to become the first and only Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center in Nevada.

"By achieving this advanced certification, Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center has thoroughly demonstrated the greatest level of commitment to the care of its patients with a complex stroke condition,” says Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., president and CEO, The Joint Commission. “Certification is a voluntary process and The Joint Commission commends Sunrise Hospital for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate the standard of its care for the community it serves.”

Todd P. Sklamberg, CEO of Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and Sunrise Children’s Hospital, said, “For patients and family members at risk for stroke, experiencing stroke or recovering from stroke, this is an important achievement that Nevada now has this high level of neurovascular service.” He added, “We are extremely grateful to all Care Team members who touch our stroke patients each day and to the neuroscience physicians and clinical teams who are bringing this advanced level of neurovascular service to our community.”

In addition to being home to the only Comprehensive Stroke Center in the state, in related news, Sunrise Hospital has also once again earned the “Get with the Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus: Target Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus Quality Achievement award from the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association. The award recognizes that the stroke program at Sunrise Hospital meets national evidence-based standards and recommendations.
