Xpedio Targets Virtual Operators

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Dec. 12, 2000 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Swedish developer of mobile Internet server platforms will start a dedicated business unit for Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). A virtual operator is an operator without its own physical network. It is generally believed that they will become significant players for 3G services.

- Mobile Internet customers don't care who owns the networks -- they'll go where they get the best service. Virtual operators are in a great position to win these customers, since they aren't hampered by high overhead costs, and can leverage their brand names and focus on service. We predict they'll attract the most customers to the Mobile Internet, says Gustaf Rosell, CEO of Xpedio.

Using Xpedio's services, new entries into the MVNO space require only a well-known brand and strong customer relationships to become a virtual operator almost overnight.

Xpedio's platform is the base for development of mobile Internet services in general. Xpedio is now forming partnerships with complimentary companies in order to offer complete solutions and services for start-up virtual operators. The mobile Internet services platform will be integrated with solutions for security, customer care, and third-party functionality such as gaming. Customer billing -- by the packet, minute, or transaction -- will also be provided.

Europe, with its established GSM market, will continue to lead the way. The US becomes a promising market somewhat later, especially for WISPs -- Wireless ISPs, or virtual operators focusing on data communications.

- The 3G environment will create many opportunities for virtual operators, says Gustaf Rosell. Network owners somehow have to fill their networks with users, and ought to benefit from co-operating with strong brand owners whose MVNOs promise to bring customers into the wireless space.

Interest and demand for Xpedio's services are already high, with several well-known customers in the pipeline. There is special interest from companies in the media sector, as well as from companies focusing on young urban lifestyles.

First commercial services are expected to be in operation early 2001.
