Nokia to supply broadband IP access solution to GuangDong Telecom in China

Nokia has signed an agreement with GuangDong Telecom to supply Nokia's D50e broadband access solution to GuangDong province in China, bringing fast Internet access to subscribers.

In the contract, Nokia will supply its broadband access solution to the ten major cities in GuangDong province, including Shenzhen, DongGuan, ZhuHai, and NanHai. The Nokia solution enables GuangDong Telecom to start with minimal investment then scale up for extensive coverage throughout the entire province.

GuangDong is located in the southern area of China, and is considered one of the most open and fast developing areas. It includes Shenzhen, which is one of the earliest established special open economic zones in China.

The Nokia D50e is a flexible, two-stage ATM-transmission based DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) platform, which enables operators to provide customers with high-speed DSL services ranging up to 8 Mbps. With the Nokia D50e platform, operators can make full use of existing network resources and coverage and provide selectable bandwidth to satisfy the increasing demand for high-speed Internet access. Working with Nokia’s other IP (Internet Protocol) products, the Nokia D50e helps operators to establish an optimum DSL broadband access system.

"Nokia is proud to be cooperating with GuangDong Telecom, helping bring advanced high-speed Internet access to Chinese subscribers," said Antti Ware, Vice President, System Business, Nokia (China) Investment Co. Ltd. "The Nokia solution allows operators to provide users with simultaneous access to the broadband network and traditional telephone service."

In April 2000, Nokia’s broadband access equipment, the Nokia D50e, passed the final tests of the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) and gained an approval license for China. Nokia thus became the first infrastructure manufacturer to be awarded a broadband Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) license in China, successfully initiating Nokia’s marketing strategy for entering the high-speed Internet and broadband access fields in China. Consequently, the Nokia D50e passed the trial testing process held by GuangDong TA.

Nokia’s global broadband DSL position is stronger than ever with its latest DSL customer announcements. Nokia’s broadband solution, featuring the D50 DSLAM and LoopMaster, is deployed in over 4,500 central offices worldwide whose telecom networks reach 90 million homes and businesses. Nokia’s DSLAM is deploying DSL across five continents.
