Nokia launches world's first demonstration of Mobile IPv6-based multimedia network

Nokia today launched the world's first demonstration of IP multimedia capable Mobile IPv6 which allows continuous and smooth connectivity while moving between wireless access points.

The platform, demonstrated at the Global IPv6 Forum in Madrid, is the first ever to show how Mobile IPv6 enables smooth handovers over IP Telephony improving the quality of real-time audio traffic. Another significant advantage is the ability to assign quality levels to different traffic flows.

The groundbreaking demonstration shows a functional miniature network based on IPv6, which offers significant enhancements compared to the current IPv4 protocol. In addition it also illustrates IPv4-IPv6 interoperability, which will be essential as the evolution to the Mobile Internet continues.

"This is another world first for Nokia and highlights Nokia's commitment to IPv6 as one of the key enablers of the Mobile Internet," said Asko Rasanen, Head of the Nokia IPv6 Program, "The demonstration illustrates this major step towards providing future proof networks in different access environments and shows the functionality of Mobile IPv6 and its capability to support applications in the rapidly evolving mobile environment."

The expanded address space of IPv6, from 32-bit to 128-bit, which is one of its most visible advantages, provides enough capacity for a separate IP address for every device on the planet. Improved usability and a wider choice of Quality of Service parameters are further benefits of IPv6, which supports plug and play installation of Internet-enabled devices.
