Nokia launches cost-effective solution for smooth network evolution towards 3G

Nokia today launched a new solution for mobile networks: the Nokia IP Connected Core concept providing a concrete step for network evolution towards All-IP for 3G.

The Nokia IP Connected Core concept offers operators lower cost of ownership through cost savings in transmission compared to leased lines - payback time of IP interfaces can be months instead of years.

The concept includes IP Trunk, SIGTRAN signaling and IP capable Packet Core. In the Integrated IP Trunk, voice is carried over the IP network, between MSC's, while signaling for these calls is carried out by SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). IP Trunk enables "transcoder Free Operation" (TFO) meaning better speech quality and more efficient use of transmission capacity. IP Trunk is an integral part of MSCi bringing effective and concentrated network management, since it is integrated in MSC, not a separate network element.

SIGTRAN signaling offers carrying ISUP signaling over IP. IP Interfaces and SIGTRAN together enable effective use of IP Backbone for signaling between MSCi and HLRi.

With the Nokia IP Connected Core, the IP Trunk enables the utilization of IP backbone for transmission already in 2001. The revolutionary concept means optimal investment for today and for the future.
"Nokia IP Connected Core is part of Nokia's cutting edge IP based 3G core networks solution, the Nokia All-IP Mobility Core, based on IPv6," said Jan Hellman, Head of Marketing, Core Networks, Nokia, "With this revolutionary concept operators benefit from lower cost of ownership and be first to market - giving them a head start in 3G roll-out."

Nokia is leading the development of 3G mobile systems, and is committed to be first with the implementation of an All-IP core solution in 2002. The Nokia All-IP Mobility Core can be connected to major radio and data network standards, enabling a secure, complete, future proof end to end network for 3G Mobile Multimedia. Based on a revolutionary path from current GPRS packet core and GSM circuit switched core, the Nokia All-IP Mobility Core will support IPv6, required to cater for the hundreds of millions of users of the Mobile Internet, and to establish proper quality of service and security in IP networks.

Nokia has been driving the standardisation towards 3rd generation networks and is committed to be the first supplier to deliver a complete 3GPP standard compliant All-IP commercial solution. Nokia's commitment to open interfaces and therefore true freedom of choice and competition is shown in the company's determination to drive the open Iu interface and IPv6 and to be adopted in 3G mobile networks.

Nokia is the world leader in mobile communications. Backed by its experience, innovation, user-friendliness and secure solutions, the company has become the leading supplier of mobile phones and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks. By adding mobility to the Internet Nokia creates new opportunities for companies and further enriches the daily lives of people. Nokia is a broadly held company with listings on six major exchanges.
