Jaakko Pöyry Group awarded water projects in China and Namibia

Electrowatt Engineering Ltd and Soil and Water Ltd, which are mem-bers of the Jaakko Pöyry Group’s Infrastructure & Environment business group, have been awarded water supply management projects in China and Namibia. The total value of the contracts is EUR 6.1 million.

Electrowatt Engineering Ltd has been commissioned to provide construction supervision services for the Zhangjiuhe River Water Division & Water Supply projects of the City of Kunming. The services include construction supervision of two tunnels with a total length of 13.7 and 7.8 kilometres, respectively, and a diameter of 3.6 metres. The project is financed by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and local governmental subsidies. The water tunnels will be completed and put into operation by mid-2005.

This project constitutes a milestone in Electrowatt Engineering’s activities in Kunming. The company was awarded the development of the Water Supply and Sewerage Masterplan in 1988 and has been working on the Urban Development and Public Transportation Masterplan since 1993. The contract is a major step in expanding the Infrastructure & Environment business group’s services in China, both in the transport and the water and environment sector.

Soil and Water Ltd has been awarded a contract for phase III of the Community Water Supply Management Support Programme (CWSMSP) in Namibia, financed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. The project will be implemented during 2001-2004. CWSMSP phase III is a continuation of phases I and II implemented since 1997 by a consortium led by Soil and Water Ltd. The purpose of the project is to improve the community-based management of water supply in rural areas across Namibia, simultaneously supporting the decentralisation policy of the Government of Namibia in the water supply sector.

The project increases Soil and Water Ltd’s involvement in rural water supply activities and strengthens the company’s position in southern Africa. Furthermore, the project is an important reference for the Infrastructure & Environment business group, which is currently expanding its services into water resources management and rural water supply.
