The Power Situation in Norway as of 13 April 2005

Lysaker, 14 April 2005

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

The inflow of water to the Norwegian hydropower reservoirs during week 14 was 1.3 TWh. That is almost 100 percent above normal for this week. Much precipitation along with snow melting in lower-lying areas contributed to high inflows. Also for the coming week, inflows well above normal are expected.

The reservoir filling level in the Norwegian reservoirs was 35.0 percent at the end of week 14. That is a reduction of 1.8 percentage points from week 13. The normal filling level at the end of week 14 is 40.1 percent, while last year's filling level was 26.3 percent.

Lately, high prices in Germany, especially during daytime, have given considerable Nordic electricity export, and during daytime, the combined production in Norway and Sweden is higher than consumption in these countries. In total, the Nordic net export to Germany in week 14 amounted to 289 GWh. This represents an increase of more than 100 percent from last week. During week 14, the average German spot price was 0.319 NOK/kWh, while the Nordic average price was 0.240 NOK/kWh.

In the end user market, the average price on standard variable contracts offered by the dominating suppliers in 27 grid areas is 0.319 NOK/kWh for week 17. That is an increase of 0.017 NOK/kWh from last week, and is 0.029 NOK/kWh higher than the average price offered by the fifteen cheapest national suppliers.
