The Power Situation in Norway as of 16 February 2005

Lysaker, 17 February 2005

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

During week 6, the inflow of water to the Norwegian hydropower reservoirs was 20 percent above normal. This is the fourteenth week in a row with inflows above normal. During this period, the inflow has been close to 10 TWh more inflow than normal. During week 6, the reservoir filling level fell by 2.9 percentage points to 58.9 percent. This is 0.6 percentage points above normal. In Sweden, the inflow of water has been more normal. However, the last fourteen weeks, there has been an inflow of 2 TWh above average. The reservoir filling level in Sweden is now 46.0 percent, after a reduction of 3.4 percentage pints during week 6.

The improved resource situation along with low consumption caused by mild weather, has given high electricity production and electricity export. During week 6, the Norwegian export was 0.3 TWh, and so far this year, the net export has been 1.4 TWh. Norway is exporting to Sweden and Denmark. Denmark exports to a large extent to Germany, while Sweden has considerable export to Finland. In Finland, it seems like importing from Sweden is cheaper than increasing domestic production.
