The Power Situation in Norway as of 09 February 2005

Lysaker, 09 February 2005

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

During the first five weeks of 2005, the inflow to the Norwegian hydropower reservoirs has been 8.1 TWh, which is 4.2 TWh above normal. This is caused by much precipitation and mild weather. Since 1931, there has only been three years with equal or higher inflows during these weeks. The reservoir filling level fell by 2.7 percentage points during week 5, and the filling level is now 61.8 percent. This is 1.2 percentage points above normal. In Sweden, the filling level is 49.4 percent, after a reduction of 3.4 percentage points during week 5.

So far this year, the Norwegian electricity production has been approximately 13 percent higher than the corresponding period last year. At the same time, consumption has been lower. This has resulted in high Norwegian export to Sweden and Denmark. During the five first weeks of 2005, there has been an aggregated Norwegian net export of 1.1 TWh, while there was import during the same period last year. High prices in Germany have contributed to considerable Nordic export to the Germany so far in 2005.
