Gas Prices Zoom Higher, Says Auto Club

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - February 22, 2008) - Southern Californians once again experienced double-digit price increases at the pump, as gas prices rocketed up by nearly two cents a day in most areas over the past week, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $3.199, which is 11.2 cents higher than last week, 2 cents less than last month, and 52 cents above last year. In San Diego, the price is $3.254, which is 13.6 cents more than last week's price, 2 cents above last month, and 53 cents higher than last year. On the Central Coast, the average price is $3.364, up 10.8 cents from last week, 4 cents above last month, and 52 cents more than last year. In the Inland Empire, the average price is $3.216, 13.5 cents above last week, up 1 cent from last month, and 53 cents higher than last year.

"In the past week, California resumed its usual place as the state with the second most-expensive gasoline next to Hawaii with these double-digit price increases," said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. "But prices are increasing around the rest of the country as well. Oil industry analysts say wholesale gasoline prices have risen in reaction to supply worries, despite a reported decrease in demand."
