Wightcable Chooses Airspan to Provide WiMAX to the Isle of Wight
| Source: Airspan Networks Inc.
BOCA RATON, FL--(Marketwire - March 14, 2008) - Airspan Networks Inc. (NASDAQ : AIRN ), a
leading worldwide provider of WiMAX broadband wireless access networks,
announced today that it has been awarded a contract by Wightcable for its
MicroMAX 5.8 GHz base stations, VoiceMAX for VoIP services and related CPEs
(customer premise equipment), which include Airspan's ProSTs and EasySTs.
Wightcable will provide WiMAX voice and data services across the Isle of
Wight in the United Kingdom, starting in the town of Newport.
Wightcable is the incumbent cable operator on the Isle of Wight and plans
to expand their footprint by offering WiMAX voice and data services across
the island, targeting the business and residential customer base.
MicroMAX, as well as Airspan's VoiceMAX server, is widely deployed, mature,
cost-optimized for more rural deployments, and provides true broadband with
VoIP support for the carrier's business case. Additionally, MicroMAX
supports both FDD and TDD duplexing schemes and consumes very low power --
critical capabilities for many operators.
"As the only telecommunication and cable services provider on the island,
we believe that the transition to WiMAX is the right strategy for
Wightcable and its customers. We are pleased to be working with Airspan to
quickly provide voice and data services using their technology to offer new
products to our growing customer base," commented Ian Renshaw, Chief
Executive of Wightcable.
"This is an important win for Airspan as it highlights carriers' decision
to go with alternative and innovative solutions to offer broadband access
services. We look forward to working with Wightcable as they grow their
customer base with their WiMAX offering," said Anders Rendahl, Airspan's
Senior Vice President of Sales and General Manager of EMEA.
