Head of North America for the United Nations Millennium Campaign to Ring the NASDAQ Stock Market Opening Bell

ADVISORY, Oct. 19, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

 What:
Anita Sharma, North America Coordinator of the United Nations
Millennium Campaign, will preside over the NASDAQ opening bell to
commemorate the three-day mobilization called "Stand Up and Take
Action" which ended on Sunday, during which millions of people
gathered at more than 2,000 events in more than 100 countries to
demand that world leaders end poverty.

Over the past year, progress on achieving the Millennium Development
Goals and ending poverty has actually reversed. The world's poorest,
who had no role in causing the global economic crisis, continue to
bear the brunt of its effects. Sharma will ring the opening bell as
a symbol of the commitment of citizens around the world to holding
their governments accountable for keeping the promises they have
made to eradicate extreme poverty and its root causes by achieving
the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

Sharma will be joined at the opening ceremony by model and
 actor Tyson Beckford.

About the United Nations Millennium Campaign

The UN Millennium Campaign was established by the UN Secretary General in 2002. The Campaign supports citizens' efforts to hold their governments to account for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Development Goals were adopted by 189 world leaders from rich and poor countries, as part of the Millennium Declaration which was signed in 2000. These leaders agreed to achieve the Goals by 2015. Our premise is simple: we are the first generation that can end poverty and we refuse to miss this opportunity.
