Cisco and MDeC Commit to Develop Talent, Innovation and Growth in Malaysia

Collaboration Will Establish Malaysia as a Regional Hub for Networking Technologies Training

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA--(Marketwire - November 12, 2009) -  Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) and Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), the Malaysian government's agency tasked with developing the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) in Malaysia, today announced a collaboration to establish Malaysia as a regional hub for training, certification and the development of networking technology operation skills.

This initiative is in line with the Malaysian government's agenda to provide a strong platform to create and build a highly skilled knowledge-based workforce, through which Malaysia can enhance its position as a global information and communication technology (ICT) and multimedia hub.

"The network has become the platform for ICT services in collaboration and virtualization. However there is a global shortage of professionals with knowledge of designing and operating this Internet Protocol (IP) based Platform. Cisco is committed to driving innovation and building talent in the area of IP-based networking and technologies, creating a sustainable, highly-skilled and in-demand workforce to drive growth. Our collaboration with MDeC will provide training and development skills that will contribute to the local knowledge infrastructures critical for accelerating and sustaining economic growth in Malaysia," said Sameer Padhye, senior vice president, Worldwide Service Provider Line of Business, Cisco Services.

Integral to this collaboration, Cisco will provide training and development for local partner companies to enable them to offer potentially the complete range of Cisco training programs and certifications to students throughout the region.

"MDeC is excited about this collaboration with Cisco as we work together to maximize Malaysia's economic potential with the development of training programs for our local partners. This initiative is a strategic lead up to our aim in creating a higher value-add and knowledge-based economy that will drive further increases in per capita income and fulfil the existing job market demands by providing the opportunity and environment that support development of skill sets and competencies for the industry," said Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, chief executive officer of MDeC.

"Cisco's collaboration with MDeC resonates with the government's emphasis on creating high quality human capital to support the national development agenda and enable Malaysia to compete on a global scale. Technology and the network as a platform for transformation plays a key role -- with a positive impact on communities, cities, countries and individual lives. Through this transformation, highly-skilled employees can add value by raising the profile of Malaysia and the economy through their highly sought after networking skills," said Anne Abraham, managing director, Cisco Malaysia.

With globalisation and the increased use of video, collaboration and Web 2.0 technologies continuing to level the playing field and benefit countries like Malaysia, Cisco's partnerships enable the government to power Malaysia's innovation economy and enhance the country global competitiveness for ICT and multimedia investments. In 2008, Cisco entered into a strategic collaboration with YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of YTL Corporation Berhad, to roll out a broadband WiMAX network that will allow Malaysians in both urban and rural areas to live the connected life and enjoy converged services on the 4G network.
