R.A.S.E.R. HD Provides Energy Efficient "Free Cooling" Option for High-Density IT Equipment


CHANDLER, Ariz., Nov. 10, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Elliptical Mobile Solutions recently announced that alpha testing has been completed on its latest Micro-Modular Data Center (MMDC), the R.A.S.E.R. HD. Initial testing revealed the rack-level, container-based data center is capable of cooling IT equipment using water temperatures up to 85° F due to EMS's proprietary closed loop cooling methodology. According to Scott Good, director of critical facilities for GKK Works, who conducted the testing, this is a major breakthrough as chillers used to cool IT equipment represent 33 to 40% of a data center's energy cost.

He said he is confident that given an IT load to test he could see PUE's of 1.03 and better.

The findings are also important because a higher inlet water temperature maximizes the number of hours in which "free cooling" is possible through the use of water side economizers. Additionally, chiller efficiencies increase at a higher supply water temperature.

"Close-coupled cooling embodies two of the industry's favorite buzzwords: modularity and scalability," Good said. "Instead of building larger spaces and installing more air conditioners, professionals can 'right-size' from the very beginning instead of trying to reinvent the wheel."

Running the infrastructure at full capacity in anticipation of future compute loads only increases operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions, and lowers datacenter efficiency," he said.

The R.A.S.E.R. HD's closed loop cooling addresses the compute load independent of the room in which it's installed. With this approach, the rack and heat exchanger work exclusively with one another, creating a microclimate within the enclosure.

"The closed-loop/coupled design offers consistency in cooling performance, independent of the raised floors, floor tiles, and fans associated with traditional cooling. These products scale to successfully support the full gamut of rack loads, from minimal to high density. Alpha testing was conducted at Tempe, Arizona-based United Metals, an industry leader in outside air energy recovery and evaporative cooling. Located in the heart of one of the harshest climatic regions of the world, where temperatures can exceed 120° F, United Metal Products has a reputation for dealing with the toughest cooling issues.

The R.A.S.E.R. HD is a 42U, NEMA 4 Micro Modular Data Center designed to handle redundant IT loads from 20 to 80 kW. (The testing used a 23kW load bank.)

Additional features include:

  • Hot swappable and field upgradable heat exchanger units that can support multiple configurations while adding additional redundancy.
     
  • Fire detection/suppression as well as an electronic security system that are HIPPA/SOX compliant.

The testing was conducted outdoors on a clear day in Phoenix, Arizona. The temperature outside, taken prior to each test, ranged from 85 to 103° F.

The R.A.S.E.R. HD not only met but exceeded the testing criteria, Good said, including demonstrating the robust nature of the unit. At no time during any of the testing did the load banks experience any kind of fault or alarm.
