The Shrine Circus, as represented in Ontario by the Zerbini Family, is a traditional European big-top, family circus caravan. It will be performing in 7 locations in Ontario this summer. For over 80 years, it has brought smiles to children's faces, has made moms and dads laugh, and has thrilled audiences of all ages with their stunning performances. Now the Shrine Circus wants to hear from their fans about their preferences for circus acts through an online poll.

"The circus is such a special place when it's a traditional circus like this. The circus is an art form that is over 500 years old, that's older than opera or baseball. There is something in this show for young and old," said Joseph Bauer, Jr., ringmaster and 8th generation circus performer.

Recently, there have been efforts to restrict the kind of family entertainment available at circuses in Canada. Zoos, aquariums, theme parks, and animal sanctuaries are being pressured into shipping their elephants and other exotic animals out of Canada, depriving families of the only opportunity many will ever have to see these majestic animals first-hand. And despite public awareness and renewed conservation efforts, it is a challenge for the Shrine Circus to maintain its European traditions and present the animal performers that they are famous for.

"I'm keeping the act going and my son and daughter are ninth generation performers. It would be a lot for me to want to give it up. It's in our blood and we really enjoy sharing it with Canadians," added Bauer.

Exotic animals, especially elephants, have held great importance in many of the world's societies and cultures throughout history. They have been a part of human society and our traditions for as long as circuses have been around. The Shrine Circus wants to provide circus fans with the opportunity to express their opinions as to which acts they feel are essential for a circus to be truly satisfying.
