Electricity consumption has increased this year, as compared to the last one, by 5.6 percent, up to 4.5 billion kilowatt hours (kWh). This is indicated by data of the first half year of 2016 of the electricity and gas distribution company “Energijos Skirstymo Operatorius“ (ESO)

The major part of electricity – 69 percent – was used by commercial customers, including into this category industrial enterprises, small and medium business, budgetary institutions and agricultural companies. The remaining part – 31 percent – of electricity was consumed by residents.

During January - June this year, commercial customers consumed 3.1 billion kWh electricity – 6 percent more than in 2015 at the same time, when 2.9 billion kWh electricity was consumed. This was mostly affected by an increase of 8.7 percent in electricity consumption by small and medium business, and of 2.8 percent by industrial companies.

“Small and medium business is a group consuming the biggest part of electricity and is distinguished as a customer group increasing electricity consumption the most since the end of the economic crisis. Consumption by industrial companies is somewhat smaller, yet this customer group has distinguished for slightly lower, yet stable growth in electricity consumption since 2010. At a general level, bigger than the usual growth in the need for electricity by commercial customers was determined by cold winter and the improving economic situation in the country”, told Mr. Liudas Liutkevičius, CEO of ESO.

During the first half of this year more electricity was consumed also by companies engaged in agricultural activity and by budgetary institutions – 4.1 percent and 2.8 percent, accordingly.

During January-June of this year, residents consumed 1.4 billion kWh of electricity. This is 4.7 percent more than during the first half of 2015, when residents consumed 1.3 billion kWh. Like in the group of commercial customers, bigger electricity consumption was recorded during the first quarter due to cold weather conditions.

In all major cities of the country and their district municipalities, electricity consumption has also increased: commercial and private customers consumed 1.1 billion kWh (6.1 percent) in Vilnius district, 0.6 billion kWh (7 percent) - in Kaunas district, 0.5 billion kWh (5.1 percent) - in Klaipėda district, 0. 2 billion kWh (4 percent) - in Šiauliai district, 0.2 billion kWh (4.1 percent) - in Panevėžys district.
