Verizon Sweeps Mobile Performance Awards in New York City and Tri-State Area for Second Consecutive Time, RootMetrics Says

New report shows close races in network reliability and call performance

BELLEVUE, Wash., May 23, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- According to RootMetrics®, the independent source for real-world mobile performance comparison, Verizon sweeps the awards in New York City and Tri-State Area, claiming five outright awards of the six mobile performance categories. The new 1st Half 2017 New York City and Tri-State Area Metro RootScore Report shows Verizon building on its success from the previous testing period, taking both Data Performance and Call Performance RootScore Awards outright in tight races. Notably, the carrier also claims first place outright for network reliability for the sixth consecutive testing period.

Looking at data performance in the metro area, Verizon and T-Mobile post excellent median download and upload speeds, though Verizon claims the Data Performance RootScore Award outright for the second testing period in a row. Both T-Mobile and Verizon record the fastest median download speeds at 26.8 Mbps and 25.5 Mbps, respectively, meaning subscribers can download a high-definition TV show in about three minutes. Meanwhile, T-Mobile records the fastest median upload speed at 16.7 Mbps, meaning T-Mobile customers can upload a video to social media in less than five seconds.

“While Verizon leads the mobile performance categories throughout our latest report, consumers in New York City and Tri-State Area are seeing improvements in their mobile networks,” said Annette Hamilton, RootMetrics director. “Whether downloading a TV show to watch on-the-go or making calls all across the city, consumers in the Big Apple have excellent carrier options depending on how they use their mobile devices most.”

This is the twelfth time RootMetrics has tested the mobile networks in New York City and Tri-State Area and issued findings for the metro area. RootScore Reports provide a scientific, independent, consumer-focused assessment of mobile network performance.

Mobile Performance You Can Depend on
Reliability and speed are crucial to a consistently good mobile experience. RootMetrics indicates performance in these key areas with its network reliability category, a combination of results from data, call, and text tests; and its network speed category, which examines results across testing of data transfers, downloading email, and web/app tasks. All four carriers show high reliability in New York City and Tri-State Area, but Verizon ultimately wins the award outright for the sixth consecutive testing period. Verizon also claims the Network Speed RootScore Award outright for the second time in a row.

Data Performance
The data performance category reflects how well networks perform in downloading and uploading data, performing email tasks, and downloading files that approximate loading typical webpages or apps. T-Mobile and Verizon record the fastest median download speeds at 26.8 Mbps and 25.5 Mbps, respectively, which means subscribers can download a high-definition TV show on either in about three minutes. T-Mobile records the fastest median upload speed at 16.7 Mbps, allowing subscribers in the metro area to upload a video to social media in less than five seconds.

Call and Text Performance
Call and text capabilities are fundamental to a strong mobile experience. Call performance testing is based on how reliably each network can place and maintain calls, while text performance measures how reliably and quickly consumers can send and receive text messages. All four carriers perform well when it comes to call performance, but Verizon ultimately claims the RootScore Award outright. The text performance category results in a four-way tie for the second testing period in a row.

Comprehensive Testing

To evaluate the mobile experience in New York City and Tri-State Area, RootMetrics conducted tests across all hours of the day and night from April 10 through April 25. Using smartphones purchased off the shelf at carrier stores, tests were conducted indoors at 305 locations and while driving 6,186 miles. For details about RootMetrics testing, see the methodology section of the RootMetrics website.
