Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta Announces Preliminary 2017 Year-end Financial Results


ATLANTA, Feb. 21, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta (the Bank) today released unaudited financial highlights for the quarter and year ended December 31, 2017. All numbers reported below for 2017 are approximate until the Bank announces 2017 audited financial results in its Form 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which is expected to be filed on or about March 8, 2018.

The Bank reported net income of $93 million for the fourth quarter of 2017, an increase of $4 million from net income of $89 million for the fourth quarter of 2016. The Bank reported net income of $349 million for 2017, an increase of $71 million from net income of $278 million for 2016. The increase in net income during the fourth quarter and year ended 2017 was primarily attributable to an increase in interest rates.

As of December 31, 2017, the Bank had total assets of $146.6 billion, an increase of $7.9 billion, or 5.69 percent, from December 31, 2016. The Bank's advances were $102.4 billion as of December 31, 2017, an increase of $3.4 billion, or 3.39 percent, from December 31, 2016. The Bank's retained earnings balance was $2.0 billion as of December 31, 2017, an increase of $111 million, or 5.82 percent, from December 31, 2016. Capital stock was $5.2 billion as of December 31, 2017, an increase of $199 million, or 4.03 percent, from December 31, 2016.

The Bank's 2017 performance resulted in a return on average equity (ROE) of 4.97 percent as compared to 4.08 percent for 2016. The ROE spread to average three-month LIBOR increased in 2017 compared to 2016, equaling 371 basis points for 2017, as compared to 334 basis points for 2016. The Bank continues to meet its regulatory capital requirements.
