Domo Releases Sixth Annual “Data Never Sleeps” Infographic

New this year, Domo shares online behavior for six industries: Financial Services, Media, Retail, Social Media, Technology and Travel

SILICON SLOPES, Utah, June 05, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Domo®, the cloud-based operating system for business, today released its “Data Never Sleeps 6.0” infographic, its sixth annual report offering insights into the online behavior of consumers by sharing the amount of data being generated every minute across popular applications and platforms such as Google, Twitter, Instagram, Netflix and more. This year, Domo added data snapshots for applications and platforms across six major industries including Financial Services, Media, Retail, Social Media, Technology and Travel.

Domo’s “Data Never Sleeps” report was first introduced in 2013, as a snapshot into the volume and velocity of data being created and shared online. Over the six years, the world’s internet population has grown significantly, and as such, the growth of online data has also seen an explosion in creation and consumption by consumers. This year marks the era of visual content, with apps and platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, Instagram and more serving up images and video content to capture the attention of consumers inundated with information.

A few highlights from “Data Never Sleeps 6.0” include:

A picture is worth a thousand words. Social platforms on images like Snapchat (up a whopping 294% from 2017), Instagram (up 5.65% from 2017) and Giphy (up 100% from 2017) all saw dramatic increases in the number of images shared in a minute. In comparison, the number of text messages sent in a minute decreased by 14.7% from the previous report.

Online streaming captured our attention. Americans increased their usage of internet data, up 18% from 2017, and presumably used this uptick in data to stream Netflix, which saw a 40% increase in streaming hours (69,444 hours to 97,222 hours) from the previous report. YouTube video views also increased from 4,146,600 videos per minute in 2017 to 4,333,560 videos per minute in this year’s report.

Twitter keeps upping the ante. It appears the reports of Twitter’s demise are exaggerated, as users sent 473,300 tweets per minute in 2018, up from 456,000 the previous year. They may also be saying more in those messages, as Twitter increased its character limit to 280 in late 2017.

No Cash, No Problem. Peer-to-peer transactions are increasing in popularity and usage. App Venmo processed 32% more in transactions per minute ($51,892 vs. $68,493) in 2018 as compared to 2017.

“Data is the lifeblood to businesses and consumers alike, and our Data Never Sleeps reports highlight just what data is important to our daily lives,” said Josh James, founder and CEO, Domo. “Understanding the stories that data tells us about people can help us better collaborate, communicate, and make it easier to create good for others and for our organizations.”
