Protest Against Family Separation Tomorrow, June 21st, at the Capitol

Executive Order signed by President Trump fails to address the plight of small children; All are invited to attend the Family Day Protest at 12 noon on Thursday, June 21

WASHINGTON, June 20, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tomorrow - Thursday, June 21 from 12-1 p.m. at the U.S. Capitol (1st Street and East Capitol, House East Front Grassy Egg, Washington, D.C. 20510) - people will gather for a Family Day Protest to oppose the forced separation of families at the U.S. Border.

The Executive Order signed by President Trump earlier today continues, and even escalates, a zero tolerance policy that criminalizes immigrants, eliminates discretion, and now allows for the indefinite detention of families, including children. The Executive Order fails to address the plight of small children who have been separated from their parents and placed in detention facilities under the current policy.

For these reasons and more, the group will protest tomorrow – sending a message to Congress, the Administration, and families in other countries that Americans value the family and oppose any policy or party that seeks to separate children from their parents at the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

Massachusetts Rep. Joe Kennedy III and Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin are among those scheduled to address the crowd. Additional members of Congress and law enforcement officials are invited to address the group about creating a legal and political framework that supports the family structure and respects the dignity of immigrants and refugees.

June 21st, the first day of summer, marks the beginning of a season when families spend time together and build their most treasured memories. Gathering on this day sends a message that Americans love their country, love their families, and support all families across the globe. As a nation of immigrants, Americans sympathize with those driven from their homes, support family values, and oppose any policy or party that forces families apart.

Participants are encouraged to bring pictures of their own families to hold up as a reminder of their personal and national values. They are also invited to bring their children and display a “Keep Families Together” banner.

Those wishing to participate may register on Eventbrite (https://bit.ly/2lnZ5dH) and can find the event on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/events/187559638629830/).
